Prince George Buzzing with Activity
By Terri McClymont, Executive Director REAPS - Sunday May. 9th, 2010
Prince George will be buzzing with activity on the weekend of May 28th, 29th and 30th. It will be a great day to be out and about. Three local organizations will be holding fundraising events.
Starting on May 28th from 6 to 9 p.m. and continuing on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Andrew's United Church on the corner of 5th and Union, the Prince George Symphony will be holding Erica's Booksale named after the principal oboist Erica Skowron. Erica is organizing this year's sale and has expanded it into a larger event including a concert, paper shredding by donation, a silent auction and other items for sale including symphony travel mugs and handmade pop up music cards. The concert will feature many of the professional core of the orchestra, some community players and a few local choirs. It will be a great opportunity to hear the different instruments close up in an intimate setting. The concert will run for the duration of the entire sale but patrons can come and go as they please. Admission to the concert is by donation and concert goers will be treated to complimentary tea, coffee and baked treats. The Friday night's concert is titled "Cafe Mozart" and will feature a lovely program of Mozart Nocturnes, Divertimenti and Serenades. Saturday promises more great music. Visit www.pgso.com for a detailed program.
REAPS will be holding their annual plant sale Saturday, May 29th at REAPS Compost Demonstration Garden 1950 Gorse Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Featuring perennials, herbs, veggies, vines and shrubs at great prices. REAPS will host a Backyard composting workshop at 2 p.m. and Vermicomposting workshop at 3 p.m. Information will be available on where to recycle over 54 household items in Prince George.
The Railway and Forestry Museum will be partnering with the Rotary Club, the Prince George Salvation Army and the Lions Club to present their annual Charity Garage Sale and Fun Days on May 29th and 30th. Admission to the Museum is free with a donation of food for the Salvation Army. There will be a pancake breakfast and a BBQ lunch available for purchase as well as train rides. Visit www.pgrfm.bc.ca for more information.
All three organizations have partnered together to offer a special promotion to their patrons. Event cards will be available at each event and prior to the events at any of the participating organizations. If you have your card signed at each event, you can enter a draw. The winner will receive a composter, some symphony tickets and day passes to the Railway and Forestry Museum. The draw will take place on Sunday afternoon at the Railway and Forestry Museum but ticket drop off boxes will be available at each event.
It will be a weekend to celebrate the gems of life, music, literature, gardening and our national heritage while supporting many of the cities worthwhile organizations, some of Prince George's gems. All three organizations are accepting donations prior to the events. Donations of books, CDs, DVDs, music, videos, tapes and silent auction items (services, gift certificates, crafts, art, merchandise etc.) can be dropped off at the Symphony Office on 2880 15th Avenue. REAPS will be happy to pick up or dig up any donations of plants or garden items. Call (250) 561-7327 or email events@reaps.org for more information.
