The PGSO is a producer of high quality symphonic music with a core of talented and dedicated professional musicians. It is the only professional or semi-professional orchestra in northern B.C. The PGSO has been serving Prince George and northern B.C for over 35 years, and is the cultural leader in terms of live classical music.
Les Dala has been Music Director since 2003. He is a very talented and exciting conductor who is exceptional at designing programming that is diverse enough to satisfy discerning connoisseurs of classical music, while being able to grip an audience that has had little or no exposure to classical music.
The PGSO is currently building momentum initiated by a surge in concert attendance. Our audience base has increased 51% in the last two years, and we are anticipating a 20% increase in concert attendance in 2008-09. 45% of our programmes are collaborative events with other arts organizations. This results in exposure to a much more diverse audience.
In addition to producing concerts, the PGSO supports youth and education in the community through in school performances aimed at exciting kids about music. The symphony also has a mentoring programme to support amateur community musicians in the area.
The PGSO receives about 1/3 of our funding from the federal, provincial and city governments in the form of operating and project grants. Almost 1/2 of our revenue is generated from tickets sales, programme ads and general fundraising activities. We rely on sponsorships to fill the funding gap and help keep ticket prices as affordable as possible. Plus, tickets sales are stronger when the public feels that businesses and organizations support the symphony.
